The Gospel according to Linkin Park

The following are 3 songs by Linkin Park, just the first verse(s) and Chorus. Art is always a reflection of culture and here are songs that demonstrate the cry of the lost man. See what they long for is EXACTLY what God offers.

What I've Done (A picture of Salvation)
In this farewell
There’s no blood

There’s no alibi
‘Cause I’ve drawn regret
From the truth
Of a thousand lies - This reflects the farewell to the old way of life, the flawed philosophy or as they put it "The truth of a thousand lies". There is no excuse or Alibi, there is no blood or in other words nothing deserved; simply part of our nature.

So let mercy come
And wash away
What I’ve doneI'll face myself
To cross out what i’ve become
Erase myself
And let go of what i’ve done - This reflects the merciful blood of Christ washing away our identity at the moment of salvation, the moment we are most honest with ourselves, the moment we erase ourselves and let go of the guilt of our past and enter into clean forgiveness.

New Divide  (A picture of Sanctification)
I remembered black skies
The lightning all around me
I remembered each flash
As time began to blur
Like a startling sign
That fate had finally found me
And your voice was all I heard
That I get what I deserve - This reflects the Holy Spirit of God indwelt in the believer changing and sanctifying after Salvation. The old nature still in us is a black sky and turmoil of storms that the sin nature created. Now Christ is forcing us to reckon with our old nature. "Fate had finally found me" signifying being conformed to the image of Christ. Fate - predestination. The overpowering force of the Holy Spirit changes us, the "voice was all I heard" being the voice of Christ. The last line doesn't fit with the general thoughts on salvation (That I get what I deserve). But remember the context is Sanctification, therefore after the moment of salvation, the result of your decision is sanctification done by the Holy Spirit, something outside your control.

So give me reason
To prove me wrong
To wash this memory clean
Let the floods cross
The distance in your eyes
Give me reason
To fill this hole
Connect this space between
Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies
Across this new divide - This continues in the Spirit/Flesh battle. Give me reason for the following: to prove me(flesh) wrong, to wash this memory clean (John1:9) continued cleansing of sin. The flood, or water is a picture of the Holy Sprit, the distance, hole, space between and new divide is the process of sanctification. God's eyes looking on crossing you over this NEW divide. A divide never crossed before in life.

Burn it Down (A portrayal of the current chasm in the church)
The cycle repeated
As explosions broke in the sky
All that I needed
Was the one thing I couldn't find
And you were there at the turn
Waiting to let me know - The Cycle represents times in church history where war breaks out between those who fight for tradition and those who fight for mission, sometimes this is shown as the older and younger generations in the church battling. But more accurately this is the tension between Tradition and Mission. Explosions shows the magnitude of tension that exists. "All that I needed Was the one thing I couldn't find." In Church today what we need is Solid Truth from the Bible and its the one thing that is so hard to find in Churches. YOU (Christ) there at the TURN (People give up tradition for the mission) to let me know.....we build it up to tear it down.

We're building it up
To break it back down
We're building it up
To burn it down
We can't wait
To burn it to the ground - The cycle is simple. As a Church we build up traditions that accomplish the mission. When those traditions no longer serve the purpose they were intended to serve we break it back down.

The colors conflicted
As the flames, climbed into the clouds
I wanted to fix this
But couldn't stop from tearing it down
And you were there at the turn
Caught in the burning glow
And I was there at the turn
Waiting to let you know - "Colors conflicted" This reflects the contrasting views. "Flames" picturing the anger and combative nature in these types of transitions, "clouds" representing the cloudiness that surrounds the arguments.   "I wanted to fix this" Bring the mission to light and get rid of worthless tradition is the desire. "Couldn't stop from tearing git down" We fought and tore down the old ways and in the glow of the beautiful aftermath of war Christ was there at the Turn.

We're building it up
To break it back down
We're building it up
To burn it down
We can't wait
To burn it to the ground

The longer we hold on the longer we push people away.
