Being involved in college ministry for several years now I am struck by how much power a father has in the life of his children. Many of the issues my students deal with can be traced back to their father or father figure not meeting a need.
The need of boys is for their father to affirm their manhood. You don't feel like a man until your father tells you, you are a man. Much of what we term "immaturity" can be seen as a male acting out to get approval from other males to affirm his manhood.
The need for girls is for the father to tell them they are beautiful and enough. So many girls struggle with relationship issues because they seek the approval of their father in their romantic relationships.
This makes sense: Single moms, absent fathers, broken homes are the norm not the exception for college students.
Men love your wives, and love your children.
John Mayer :
Oh, you see that skin?
It's the same she's been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she's left
Cleaning up the mess he made
So fathers, be good to your daughters
Daughters will love like you do
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers
So mothers, be good to your daughters too
